Danish zoo faces criticism over proposition of feeding pets to predators
According to reports, the zoo recently published a message on social media explaining that the initiative was intended to “imitate the natural food chain” and provide the appropriate diet for its carnivorous residents.
“Chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs form an important part of the diet of our predators,” the post read. “That way, nothing goes to waste — and we ensure natural behavior, nutrition and well-being of our predators.”
The zoo’s official website includes detailed criteria for horse donations. Animals must be in good physical condition, not exceed 147 cm in height, and must be delivered with the correct paperwork. Once accepted, the horses are euthanized and butchered by zoo personnel. Owners may receive a minor tax rebate based on the animal’s body weight.
The proposal has triggered a heated response on social media. While some people defended it as a reasonable and realistic approach to feeding zoo animals, many others were disturbed by the notion. Some critics argued that it signaled a “terrible trend of indifference” toward the value of animals. One person called it “a deeply perverse and degrading mindset.” Another mocked the idea by asking if “healthy but annoying neighbourhood children” could also be handed in.
This isn’t the first time the zoo has been caught in a storm of controversy. Reports noted that in 2024, the facility put down its last two African elephants—one due to old age and the other because no appropriate companions were available—effectively ending its elephant program. The year before, another elephant was euthanized under comparable conditions.
