Zelensky confirms new phases of peace discussions with Russia

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Monday that a new round of peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia is scheduled to take place in Türkiye on Wednesday.

Zelenskyy said that preparations for the meeting, including discussions on a possible prisoner exchange, were underway. He had reviewed the developments with National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov.

“Umerov reported that the meeting is planned for Wednesday. There will be more details tomorrow,” Zelenskyy stated in his nightly video address.

Earlier that day, during a speech to Ukrainian ambassadors in Kyiv, Zelenskyy explained that Umerov had proposed the talks and stressed that “truly effective talks can only take place at the level of national leaders.” He called on diplomats to gain international support for this negotiation format.

While Moscow has not officially responded to Zelenskyy’s statement, Russian state news agency RIA cited unnamed sources confirming the talks will be held from July 24 to 25.

“The agenda from our side is clear,” Zelenskyy wrote on X, urging envoys to emphasize the significance of this diplomatic effort in their host countries.

As Ukraine readies for what may be the third round of such discussions, Zelenskyy highlighted other top diplomatic objectives: expanding global sanctions against Russia, acquiring more air defense systems, and increasing the delivery and financing of drones.

He noted that although Ukraine has garnered strong international backing, new mechanisms are needed. “From the Danish model to Czech artillery initiatives to French Mirages boosting our aviation… now the priority is drones, all types,” he said.

Zelenskyy also pointed to recent arbitration wins and frozen Russian assets as potential sources of defense funding, encouraging creative use of these resources.

In addition, he mentioned ongoing efforts with President Donald Trump’s administration to enhance air defense and collaborate on drone production.
